MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - The Kennesaw State men’s golf team takes on one of the strongest fields of the season this weekend when the Owls play in the 2010 General Hackler Championship hosted by coastal Carolina at the TPC of Myrtle Beach beginning on Sunday.
The Owls, who have finished in the top 10 in five of six events this year and is ranked No. 108 in the nation, will face a 12-team field that features seven top 50 teams, including No. 7-ranked Augusta State and No. 29-ranked Duke.
The field also includes 10 teams played in last year's NCAA Regionals and two teams (Duke and Wake Forest) that advanced to the NCAA Championships. The event also features the last six team champions of the tournament, including Pepperdine (2004), Coastal Carolina (2005), East Tennessee State (2006), Lamar (2007) and two-time defending champion Wake Forest.
“We are excited to be going to a top-notch golf tournament on a great golf course,” said head coach Jay Moseley. “This should be a great a great experience for us.”
Kennesaw State, who will be playing in the General Hackler Championship for the first time, is coming off its best finish of the year, finishing tied for third and one stroke behind the leaders at the Samford Intercollegiate.
Jeff Karlsson, who has a 71.67 stroke average this season, finished second in the Samford Intercollegiate and has moved up to No. 62 in the nation in the Golfstat Cup Men’s Individual Rankings. Karlsson has three top 10 finishes this season, including a win at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
“Jeff has been playing great and he is playing with a lot of confidence right now,” added Moseley. “It will be fun to watch him and the rest of the guys play this week on a terrific course.”
