MACON, Ga. – Continuing his tremendous freshman season, Kennesaw State’s Markeith Cummings was named to the 2010 General Shale Brick Men’s Basketball Championship All-Tournament Team.
Cummings was one of six players to be recognized for their stellar performance during the weeklong championship tournament. The redshirt freshman continued to make a name for himself as he averaged 18.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games for the Owls.
The Birmingham, Ala. native scored 23 points in the Owls semifinal loss to ETSU on Friday evening and scored 13 points in his postseason tournament debut in the Owls upset of top-seed Lipscomb on Wednesday afternoon.
Cummings was joined on the all-tournament list by Ben Smith of Jacksonville, Daniel Emerson of Mercer and trio of ETSU player; Tommy Hubbard, Justin Tubbs and tournament Most Valuable Player Micah Williams.
The all-tournament team recognition concludes an impressive rookie year for Cummings. This season he was named Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference, was a unanimous All-Freshman Team selection and also earned two A-Sun Player of the Week awards.
He is also one of the top three freshman scorers in the nation. Currently, Cummings (17.4 ppg) is third among all freshmen, behind only C.J. McCollum of Lehigh (18.9 ppg) and Fordham’s Chris Gaston (18.0 ppg), who Cummings outscored, 27-26, in their head-to-head meeting on Dec. 29 when the Owls defeated Fordham, 79-66.
Cummings is also the only freshman in the country to post a point/rebound and point/assist double-double this season. He had 10-points and 10-assists against Lipscomb on Dec. 5 and added four other point/rebound double-doubles.
He was one of only two rookies in the nation to have a pair of 30-plus scoring games this season. The 6-foot-7-inch Cummings dropped in 32-points versus Belmont on Dec. 3 and scored 30-points in a Jan. 22 win at Florida Gulf Coast.
