Gulley Earns National Nod Again

Senior receives Top Performer designation from CVU.com

11/10/2010 1:08:54 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - For the second time in 2010, Kennesaw State senior outside hitter Sabrita Gulley has been honored by Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com).  The North Chicago, Ill., native was tabbed as a "Top Performer" for the week after guiding the KSU volleyball squad to the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships.

"Sabrita has been working very hard to make this a special senior season," said KSU head coach Karen Weatherington.  "For her to earn this recognition twice from Collegiate Volleyball Update is truly remarkable.  I am very proud that she is being noticed for everything she has been doing for this team."

Gulley, the reigning A-Sun Player of the Week, had 36 kills and just four errors in a pair of A-Sun matches as the Owls earned a bye into the semifinals of next week's A-Sun Championships.  Against East Tennessee State, Gulley had a team-high 14 kills to pace the Owls to a, 3-1, victory.  In doing so, the Owls broke a tie with ETSU for second place in the A-Sun.  One day later, Gulley's 22 kills, including seven in the final set, lifted the Owls to a, 3-1, win over USC Upstate.

Earlier this season, Gulley earned "Top Performer" recognition after posting 21 kills in a, 3-0, sweep of Alabama A&M Sept. 24.  At the time, it set a new KSU and A-Sun record for kills in a three-set match in the 25-point era, a mark that would be matched later in the season by teammate Alyssa Lang against North Florida.

For the season, Gulley has 346 kills, averaging 3.84 per set.  If she scores 22 more points in 2010, Gulley will reach the 400-point mark for the second consecutive season.  With 12 kills last night against Georgia, Gulley eclipsed the 1,200 kill mark for her career, easily a Kennesaw State record.

Gulley and the rest of the Owls will play Mercer this Saturday at 5 p.m. in Macon.  Saturday's contest will be the last regular-season match for KSU before starting play in the semifinals of the A-Sun Championships Nov. 19 in Fort Myers, Fla.
