KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State standout freshman Markeith Cummings was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week for the second time after leading the Owls to a pair of road wins at Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
Cummings, who is the NCAA’s leading freshman scorer, averaged 24.5 points and seven rebounds in two games, including a 30-point performance against FGCU in which he became one of only two freshman in the country to post a pair of 30-plus scoring games this season, joining Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum.
The Birmingham, Ala. native scored the first 17 points of the game on Thursday night and had 21 points at halftime in the Owls one-point win at FGCU. He followed up Friday’s performance with his third double-double of the year, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a win over Stetson.
The 6-foot-7-inch Cummings became the first-ever Kennesaw State player to earn multiple A-Sun Player of the Week Awards in the same season. He won his first POTW award on Dec. 7, after scoring 32 points against Belmont and dropping in while also leading the Owls to a win over Lipscomb.
The award is the eighth Player of the Week honor for KSU players and Cummings is the fifth different Owls player to earn the award. He joins Ronell Wooten as the only Kennesaw State players to have won multiple A-Sun Player of the Week honors. Wooten won three awards, one in three consecutive seasons from 2005-08.
