KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team had five players earn academic honors as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its 2008-09 NCAA Division I Scholar Athletes.

“I am pleased to see the record-breaking number of our players who earned this honor,” said women’s head coach Brandon Padgett. “It is a testament to the young ladies dedication to tennis and their commitment to academics.”

Morgan Carney, Courtney Cox, Mercedes Cobos, Lindsay Dillon and Mackenzie Swindall were all named scholar athletes after meeting the requirements of having at least a 3.5 grade point average as well as earning a varsity letter for the 2008-09 season.

The women’s team was one of 54 teams honored by the ITA for team academic excellence. The Owls team overall grade point average surpassed the cumulative 3.2 minimum required by the ITA.

“Earning the team academic award was most certainly a team effort,” added Padgett. “If one player struggled in the classroom there was a teammate to pick her up, the same way it was on the court during the season.”

Kennesaw State was one of two Atlantic Sun Conference teams to make the prestigious list that also included East Tennessee State.
